Before I even started my internship, I had nothing but positive thoughts about SIDs in General but now I think I have a more realistic picture. The SID has to my in constant contact with the conference SID and with all other SIDs within the conference, they have to be in contact with local news outlets, and they have to be in constant contact with the coaches. The SID has to have a cordial relationship with everyone in the athletics department; the position is one of the only positions in the office that deals with every person in the office. In Brian's case he doesn't have a set budget, so he has to share a budget with the Athletics Director; the rest of the staff ie. the coaches all have their own budgets and don't have to necessarily run every little thing by the AD.
Somedays there was not much more than writing for me to do so Brain allowed me to work from home. I didn't work from home much, but any time there was an away game I spent my nights waiting for the stats so that I can write from home and once I received them, I completed my work and sent them in to Brian. He was very flexible with my schedule because he didn't get in most days until 10:30 and that's because he spent most nights in the office.
I like the idea of working from home but I much rather work in an office setting, it makes me feel that I am truly in the element if athletics. On some occasions I had no choice but to work from home, like the late nights and weekends that I clocked. In sports information it would be unrealistic to believe that nights and weekends were not part of the job. |
