The Olympic Games began this past week and while there have been medals awarded already, maybe the biggest news coming out of Sochi is the malfunction during the Winter Games opening ceremony.
Seven years after being awarded the right to host the 2014 Winter Games, Russia was unveiled its opening ceremony on Thursday; some believe that it is the most expensive opening ceremony in history. This may be true, and while Russia’s message that they deserve to have the Olympics, one big mistake may be the one thing some people remember about the over the top extravaganza. All the creative minds involved couldn’t ensure that the fifth ring of the Olympic logo would transform from a snow flake as the previous four did.
The rest of the ceremony was beautiful and so was the concept of the five rings transforming from snowflakes but this Olympic fan couldn’t help but think about how they couldn’t get the last snowflake to become a ring. The 18-chapter three hour ceremony served as Russia’s way of telling the rest of the world that they were back in terms of the Olympics; Russia previously hosted the Games of the XXII Olympiad in Moscow (1980 Olympics) but due to the Soviet War in Afghanistan, 65 countries, including the U.S. boycotted. It’s rumored that as a form of retaliation the Soviet Union (Russia) led a boycott of the next Olympic events: 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, CA.
