It’s been two weeks since the last NFL game. Fourteen days since a play was run, a pass was caught, or a flag was thrown. Fourteen days since any one has set around the T.V. to watch football. While there has been no football played in two weeks, the NFL has generated some of the biggest headlines these past two weeks. With all eyes on the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, the two teams playing in Super Bowl XLVIII, one player has made some of the biggest noise, literally.
Richard Sherman was been the topic of conversation for the past two weeks because of a rant at the end of the NFC Championship game where he called out 49ers’ player Michael Crabtree. Sherman, in his rant, claimed to be the best corner in the league and that Crabtree, a sorry receiver according to Sherman, didn’t stand a chance to make a play against him. While he was loud and did get everyone talking about him, are his claims true? Is he the best corner in the league? Well if you look at his stats, he led the league this season with 8 interceptions and his 20 interceptions over the past three years is the most in the NFL. His stats do back up his claim that he is the best or at least one of the elite cornerbacks in the league, if you ask players and coaches they’ll disagree with him claims.
Washington Redskin cornerback DeAngelo Hall and New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan, are just two members of the NFL who disagree. Coach Ryan believes that Sherman has not yet reached the level of former Jet cornerback Darelle Revis who’s been in the league for seven years now, four more than Sherman. D. Hall believes that Sherman’s success is based on the team he plays for and states that in the NFL three years doesn’t make you the best in the league it’ s about longevity. Sherman has received some harsh criticism from players as well as NFL fans as he has been called everything in the book including a thug, was his rant a good business move? Since ranting on television about being the best corner in the league, Sherman has had a commercial (with Beats by Dre) playing off the media’s attention debut and he has literally been one of the biggest topics of discussion for the past two weeks. So maybe Sherman's wild ranting is good for his business. If he had said nothing, no one would be talking about him, except maybe Seahawk fans; but now Sherman has grabbed our attention. And attention from fans only means more media attention.
Hopefully all this Richard Sherman talk will die down since football returns tonight. And maybe Sherman will quiet some of his critics; maybe he’ll rethink his words and just let his skills on the field speak for themselves.
